What determines the musical scale?
We explain the priciple in our book ";Lively Physics and Exciting Experiments";
I would like to let all students make instruments by their own hands.
Making many holes around a juice can, you rotate it with a motor.
When you blow the holes through a straw, you hear some sound at a certain pitch. -
If you make some sets of holes, you get a musical scale.
Let's enjoy the musical instrument of siren type.
-
After enlarging the figure
in which many cross marks are printed, you stick it on the side of a can with sticky tape.
- You make little holes at the centers of crosses with a thumbtack.
- You enlarge the holes with a short nail.
- You enlarge the holes with a long nail besides.
- You connect the spindle of the can with the shaft of a motor by a pipe.
- You put a battery into a battery case and connect the motor by leading cords.
- When you switch on the motor, the can begins to turn.
- Blow the holes through a straw. When you blow the holes at right angle to the side of the can, you can enjoy good sounds.
